Disability Awareness Day 2019 at Limitless TravelBy Dan Shaw -
What is Disability Awareness Day?
Disability Awareness Day (DAD) is a day which promotes what disabled people can do throughout life and work. The day also showcases disabled people in different fields and industries like sports, arts and entertainment. The day focuses on disabled people’s resilience and to break barriers, achieving their goals. Disability Awareness Day 2019 took place on the 14th of July.
How did Disability Awareness Day start?
Disability Awareness Day started as an exhibition, founded by Dave Thompson MBE in 1992, which aimed to provide support for disabled people as well as raise awareness for disabilities. The event was managed by Warrington Disability Partnership, a charity founded by Thompson in 1991. Ever since 1992, exhibitions still take place annually on DAD and the event has increased in popularity each year as the day becomes more recognised.
Why is Disability Awareness Day Important?
The day is important so that everyone is aware of the range of disabilities that can affect many people’s day-to-day lives. It attempts to make disabilities more accepted and make people recognise the impacts of disabilities. It aims to create empowerment for disabled people along with equality and inclusion in society. The day, ultimately, encourages social participation for those with disabilities.
Limitless Travel celebrated Disability Awareness Day by asking the public a few questions relating to the day. From numerous people we interviewed in Birmingham, no one knew about Disability Awareness Day. However, everyone agreed that it is quite important to reflect on. This is because some people do not understand what impact a disability can have on someone’s life. DAD attempts to change this, effectively spreading awareness for a whole range of disabilities.
