Celebrating the thing that makes me Limitless!By Niamh Duffy -
'International Wheelchair Day is always 1st March and is an annual day of events and activities which take place around the World when wheelchair users celebrate the positive impact a wheelchair has on their lives.
I feel like this day has come around just at the right time because a few weeks ago I realised just how much my wheelchair has done in its short but busy life.
I’d watched over the years as my rear wheels wore away until after arriving back from a recce trip in Amsterdam the one completely split. I was left frantically ringing round companies to find one who could come before I flew to Barcelona with my family, as going without my electric wheelchair completely strips back my independence and freedom. It is the that I realised how much this wheelchair had achieved.
In almost three and a half years it has been..
To Tenerife (twice!)
To Barcelona (twice!)
To Belgium (Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp)
To the Dominican Republic
To Scotland (twice!)
This is as well as going to college and then moving on to working full time in the city centre, countless shopping trips and more nights out than I can remember.
It has been by my side for approximately 1249 days and I don’t even want to think about life without it.
Think of the qualities you desire in a best friend - loyalty, trust, dependability. It has them all, it has been through the best times and the worst times. It’s been with me when I’ve laughed until I’ve cried, when I’ve explored the world and when I’ve struggled to get out of bed.
I saw a quote from Sam Renke where she says ‘it’s easy and common to equate someone’s wheelchair to someone’s legs! This is true however for me wheelchair is so much more.’ and most importantly the fact that it allows her to ‘show my pride in being a successful woman with a disability!’ I could not agree more.
My wheelchair is my independence, it’s the reason I am able to successfully have my career, socialise and travel.
So to my wheelchair, thank you, you make me Limitless. For the opportunities you give me, I will forever be grateful... and I promise I will take better care of you – maybe even give you a wash every now and again!
