Keeping the Dream Alive
By Emma Holding -
I’m Emma, a single mother of two teenage girls Georgia, 14, and Charley 16 who was born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia – a rare brain disorder that affects her mentally and physically.
As us parents do, in an avid attempt to ‘keep the dream alive’ for my girl, I decided to embark in one of those Lapland adventures to meet Santa in his natural habitat.
The booking process was easy enough, I was assured that Charley’s special buggy would be fine at Santa’s Village. Although it was an expensive day, to see my two girls faces light up is priceless. With a 5am flight from Birmingham, we landed and the temperature difference definitely did hit us hard but we were prepared for the -20°C temperatures. Wrapped up in our coats, scarves and gloves, we got off the plane to -50°C, something we definitely weren’t prepared for.. You know what they say, you can’t predict the weather!

The airport was a remote shed, with not one person in sight. It was that cold my eyelashes froze and one of the wheels on Charley’s special buggy broke off, but we were not going to let that dampen our spirits. We ate in a big log cabin before putting on our huge insulated suits ready for the outdoor activities. Although it was too cold for Charley outside, my other daughter and my friend carried on sledging.
The highlight of our trip was the staff. They were so kind and they even carried Charley onto a covered sleigh, wrapped in ten blankets to personally meet Santa, every child’s dream. Although the cold and accessibility did cause some issues, great memories were made!
