Ring Splints By Zomile

By Jo Southall - 06/04/2016

When you’re living with an uncooperative body the smallest things can make the biggest difference. As a blogger and a student I spend a lot of time on my laptop and typing can be challenging with unstable finger joints. I have Ehlers Danlos, a hypermobility syndrome that means I can literally dislocate a finger using the space bar…

Luckily for me, I’ve found a solution to my typing troubles: Ring Splints By Zomile.

Zomile started the company in 2012. She has Ehlers Danlos, Rheumatoid Arthritis and a host of other conditions that meant she has worn splints regularly for years.  She, like me, found that increasing amounts of typing lead to increasing joint problems and horrible hand pain. She decided to combine her design degree, jewelry making skills and knowledge of splinting to make herself some silver splints. Zomile make splints for herself but also for other people with finger problems like hyperextension or instability. In the UK the lack of available silver splints has meant that Zomile’s splints are in high demand among the hypermobility community.

Splinting can make a massive difference to a persons’ quality of life but most splints on the market are depressingly lacking in style.  Zomile set out to provide a reasonably priced product for people with a range of finger conditions. Her silver splints can be worn with pride. Mine are frequently mistaken for jewelry.

Rings are also provided on access to work. Zomile works in silver, gold and semi-precious gem stones, her splints are also available in a range of textures. Zomile makes a variety of off the rack sizes but also does custom sizes.

Zomile says that disability can sometimes mean people lose their identity so anything that helps people gain back their individuality is a plus.  Zomile says that the rings have helped her to gain back finger function and I’ve found the same. The splints help alleviate my pain, prevent joint dislocations and increase my typing speed. Zomile’s customers are, once again, able to crochet, knit, write, play an instrument, paint and more! Splinting gives people back the ability to enjoy their old hobbies, things they had lost through their condition.

Zomile is always looking to create new things and she’s recently started to make new prototypes for other bracing, focusing on splints that are both functional and stylish.

If you’re reading this and looking at your own hands with a mix of curiosity and hope then Zomile has a website you can check out.  Zomile's customers are usually referred by medical professionals to purchase my finger splints, they are available on the NHS for some people. For professional advice your GP can refer you to a hand therapist. These are healthcare professionals who specialize in all things hand related and they’ll be experts in splinting.

Ciao for now
