Well Phoenix and I are getting stronger together and it's beginning to work. Since I last wrote I have been away on holiday without her cycling across the Pyrenees. It was hard leaving her but, unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of choice.
Since my injury and subsequent eyesight challenge I have continued to cycle. Obviously, if you can't see well it's dangerous to cycle... but I love it so much, so this setback won't stop me! It was and still is a passion. I was bought a tandem and my husband pilots it.
So over the most recent weeks I have continued cycling all over and together we have managed some fantastic cycle rides. Last year we went to the Alps and the year before that we cycled from Kent to Bordeaux. However when I applied for a guide dog I was concerned. Obviously a dog can't cycle!
Most of my life isn't spent cycling as my husband works full time. I wanted to benefit from how guide dogs can support me when I was alone without support from my husband.
I am benefiting so much from having Phoenix around when my husband is working and away from me. However, I really don't want cycling to stop. I want both...
Fortunately, I have dog loving friends who look after Phoenix when I am cycling. They need to be dog loving but also be willing to follow the strict rules to ensure that she continues to guide me well when I am with her.
So all is well! I missed her when on my cycling holiday and life is funny not having her around, but I can also continue doing what I love.
I had a great holiday but have now returned to being with her. I truly realise how lucky I am .
Every day she rests next to the exercise bike when we are training and I swear she looks at me and my husband with an expression which clearly says: "they are mad... why don't they rest like me?!"
