Learning Disability Week

By Niamh Duffy -

Learning Disability Week 2017, 19th- 25th June is focused around employment. Mencap is aiming to raise awareness of the benefits of employing people with a learning disability to help tackle the low levels of employment. Currently around 8 in 10 working age people with a learning disability have a mild or moderate learning disability, but fewer than 2 in 10 are in employment.

To achieve their goal of raising awareness Mencap running a campaign throughout Learning Disability Week to provide information to employers, people with learning disabilities and supporters.

If you have a learning disability…

Mencap has created some easy to read guides covering finding a job or work experience, application forms and CVS, tips on job interviews and starting work. These are available to download from their website  to read and print off.

Mencap run a work and training service called Employ Me, which can help people with learning disabilities to develop the skills they need for a workplace. They help identify potential job opportunities, review training needs and provide on-the-job support if needed.

If you’re an employer…

The latest figures show only 6% of people with a learning disability known to local authorities and who are of working age are in paid employment. Many studies have shown there are significant benefits for businesses that employ people with a learning disability including boosting staff morale, improving public image of the company and financial costs.

Mencap work with organisations to improve the employment prospects of people with a learning disability, but we know that there is a lot that needs to be done to raise awareness levels of what a learning disability is among employers. Check out their FAQs for more information.

You can find out more about learning disabilities and what it means for your workplace by downloading their Good For Business guide.
